An India-U.S. Clean Energy Research and Development Center has been established to facilitate joint research and development and deployment for clean energy technologies. Initial priority areas to be addressed will be solar energy, second generation biofuels, and building efficiency.
The Center will involve active participation of academic and private sectors of both countries working in a consortia mode. The consortium will be self-selecting teams with entities or individuals from national labs, academic institutions, private sector, NGOs etc. Awards will be made to consortia which have knowledge and experience to undertake first-rate collaborative research programs. The consortia will leverage existing resources and physical infrastructure and bring together talent from both countries.
1.Title of Agreement: India-US Agreement for setting up Joint Clean Energy Research and Development Centre. 2.Nodal GoI Ministry for implementation: Ministry of Science & Technology. 3.Nodal US Department for implementation: U.S. Department of Energy. 4.GoI signatory Dr. M.K. Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology 5.USA signatory Mr. Timothy Roemer, US Ambassador to India. 6.Validity of Agreement: 10 years, to be renewed for periods of five years so long as Bilateral S&T Agreement is in force. 7.Funding provided by GoI: US$ 5 million each year for 5 years 8.Funding provided by US Government: US$ 5 million each year for 5 years 9.Private funding if any. To match both GoI and US DoE funding.
10. The application process is open until August 16,2011. Applicants from the U.S. will be processed via the Department of Energy while applicants from India will be processed via the Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum.
